permanent transience
In 2000 I curated a small furniture exhibition ‘permanent transience’ as one of five intra regional exhibitions funded through RADF. The exhibition was presented at three locations Gympie, Palmwoods and Noosa. The catalogue concept was a collaborotion between myself and a graphic artist. The piece flexicon, that I created for the exhibition, became a prize in a fundraising raffle to offset the printing costs.
The notion of Permanent Transience 2000 is a phenomenon common to our region. People come, leave and return again either because of financial, climatic or social reasons. The work comes and
goes, depending on the season or the day, even the time of day - 'I play in a band but my real job is...'
Permanent Transience suggests an easy going adaptability/flexibility to the given situation or surroundings, and these surroundings are fabulous, both physical and social. It is quite telling
how artistic creativity is in this region is so intense considering the population size, and while it is quite easy to just enjoy these surroundings rather than to interpret or react to them, it
is simply logical to be influenced by them.
This exhibition Permanent Transience is about furniture that is linked to our system of living, our climate, our architecture - in short - furniture that has adaptability, transformability or
movement that is influenced by this region both physically and socially. It is specially designed furniture that could be luggage, that folds to pack away, is flexible is multi purpose or has
movement, like our population. John Fuller 2000
